What to Wear on Vacation in Hawaii
Vacation Wear in Hawaii
High fashion, trendy or down-home casual---your own personal preference dictates your basic clothing options. Generally, what you wear in the Hawaiian Islands depends on your lifestyle and travel destinations.
All the Hawaiian Islands are blessed with warm days and balmy nights. So it makes sense to bring clothes that are light, loose, and comfortable. Shorts, sandals or walking shoes, and short sleeve shirts or tops are appropriate during the day. Be sure your shoes are very comfortable. Don’t try to break in a new pair. It’s also a good idea to bring a hat and sunglasses. And don’t forget to pack your swimsuit--more than one is even better.
Hawaii offers a wealth of nightlife and fine dining, so bring clothes that are suited to the situation. Hawaii’s club scene rocks, particularly in Honolulu and Waikiki. Depending on the club, dress ranges from grunge to glamorous. A coat and tie are required at a handful of Hawaii’s finest restaurants, but for the vast majority casual dress is welcomed.
You’ll need warm clothes if your trip will take you to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island, or to Maui’s Haleakala National Park. That also applies if you’ll be hiking at higher elevations, spending time on the ocean, or camping. And it does get cool on occasion, particularly if you’ll be visiting up-country on one of the islands. A heavy sweater or even a jacket & rain poncho will keep you warm & dry at the higher elevations. Many tourists don’t realize that in up-country areas there is a drastic lowering of temperature. And in early mornings or after sunset, it gets downright chilly & often very damp.
Best of all, Hawaii is one of the world’s premier shopping destinations. So if you’re short of clothes or need something new to wear, you’ll have an abundance of stores, shops, and boutiques at your disposal. Most important of all: pack appropriately but bring along an extra suitcase for ALL the new clothes you’ll buy in Hawaii.
